Long before Edinburgh became Scotland's capital city, the Royal Mile was its beating commercial heart. Merchants from across Scotland and beyond gathered here to trade everything from wine and tobacco to textiles, spices and precious metals.
The closes and wynds branching from the High Street bustled with activity as goods arrived from Europe, the Americas and the wider world. Wealthy merchants built fortunes, funded schools and charities, and helped shape the city we know today.
